12 Things to Do on Koh Phangan (When There’s No Full Moon!)

The stunning tropical island of Koh Phangan is located off the east coast of Thailand, in between the islands of Koh Samui and Ko Tao in the Surat Thani district. The first time we visited Koh Phangan we were not sure what to expect, as we only heard of the island’s reputation of being the location of the infamous Full Moon party. We’re not huge drinkers so were pretty apprehensive! However, when we arrived we were delighted to find a whole other side to the island with loads of delicious and healthy food options, many speciality cafes, charming yoga studios and magical hidden beaches. We ended up discovering that there is a whole host of things to do on this wonderful island aside from the world famous parties, and we fell completely in love with the place.

Where to Stay?

First things first, the area you choose to stay on Koh Phangan really depends on what sort of trip you are hoping to have, we’ve listed below the main areas of the island and what you can expect when staying in each.

Thong Sala

When you take the ferry to Koh Phangan you will disembark at Thong Sala pier and after 5 minutes walk be directly in the town. While not as renowned for its pristine beaches like other parts of Koh Phangan, Thong Sala offers a practical and convenient base for exploring the island. It’s a bustling town with a good selection of shops, restaurants, and bars. You’ll find everything you need here, from ATMs and pharmacies to scooter rentals and tour operators. It’s two fantastic food courts, the Pantip Market and the Phangan Food Court, have a delicious and diverse selection of different cuisines, and are two that we going back to when we’re on the island.

Haad Rin

Haad Rin is synonymous with Koh Phangan’s legendary party scene and where the full moon and half moon parties occur. It is well known for its cheap bars and beach parties. This is the perfect area to stay in if you are looking to relax on some beautiful beaches during the day and party all through the night. You’ll find a range of accommodations, from budget friendly hostels to mid range resorts. During the full moon party and the days leading up to it, Haad Rin can become extremely crowded and chaotic. If you’re seeking a quieter experience, it might be best to visit at a different time of the month or stay in one of the other areas that we have mentioned.

Bottle Beach

Known to the locals as Haad Khuat, Bottle Beach is a secluded paradise on the northeastern coast of Koh Phangan. Renowned for its pristine white sands it’s a haven for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Accessible only by boat or a trek, Bottle Beach offers an escape from the crowds. The lack of development preserves its idyllic charm, making it an ideal spot for relaxation, swimming, and snorkelling. While there are a few beach bungalows and restaurants, the focus here is on enjoying the simple pleasures of island life. If you’re looking to disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in nature, Bottle Beach is the perfect destination.

Baan Tai

Baan Tai is a popular beach destination on Koh Phangan, offering a blend of relaxation and entertainment. Located between Thong Sala and Haad Rin, it’s a convenient base for exploring the island. While not as secluded as some other beaches, Baan Tai boasts a long stretch of sand, lined with a variety of accommodation, restaurants, and bars. The atmosphere is generally more laid back compared to Haad Rin, making it a suitable choice for those seeking a balance of nightlife and tranquility.

Getting Around the Island

Getting around in Koh Phangan is not too difficult, the island is quite small and it only takes around 40 minutes to drive from the top to the bottom. These are our recommended transport options.

Hire a Motorbike

Undoubtedly the best way to get around this beautiful island is by motorbike. It is perfect for those looking for flexibility and independence. You are able to easily explore the island at you own pace. Although the roads are quite quiet, driving on Thai roads can sometimes be challenging, so we advise caution. Helmets are mandatory by Thai law so make sure when hiring the bike you are provided one by the rental company.

Songthaews

Songthaews are a key method of transportation on Koh Phangan. A cross between a taxi and a bus, these open air trucks are a popular an inexpensive way to get around the island. They typically accommodate eight to ten passengers, but don’t be surprised if there are a few more squeezed in during peak times! While songthaews follow general routes around the main roads of the island, they’re also flexible. Once you hail one down you can specify your destination and negotiate your fare. These versatile vehicles are readily available at Thong Sala Pier and Haad Rin, serving as the main transportation link between these two areas.

Longtail Boats

For exploring the island’s coastline or visiting remote beaches, longtail boats are a popular choice. They offer a unique and scenic way to travel, but the cost can vary greatly depending on the distance and the number of passengers. Longtail boats are available at Haad Rin Pier, Thong Sala and Baan Tai and can drop you at any of the secluded beaches around the island.

This is a beautiful beach located within the Than Sadet National Park. It has a very relaxed and chilled out atmosphere with a little restaurant and beach bar. You do have to pay an 100 baht entry fee to the National Park to get here, you will find a ticket office on the drive down, but it is totally worth this fee to enjoy such a quiet and clean beach. 3. Koh Ma Beach

A distinctive beach destination on Koh Phangan, Koh Ma is famous for it’s stunning natural phenomenon of a “separated sea” – a narrow strip of sand that connects the mainland to a small island, exposed only at low tide. This allows you to make the journey across to the island that would usually be inaccessible. While the beach itself is relatively small, it boasts crystal clear waters and soft white sand, and is a popular destination for snorkelling.

A&E TIP: As the small island is only accessible during low tide, so it’s essential to check the tide times before planning your visit.

This is an active buddhist temple located on Koh Phangan. It continues to serve as a place of worship for local Buddhists and remains a popular destination for visitors seeking spiritual solace or cultural exploration. There are many cooking class options on Koh Phangan island. After some research we went for Muai’s Thai Traditional Cooking Academy and thoroughly recommend it! Begin with a trip to a local market to hand-pick the freshest ingredients for your dishes. Then head to Muai’s charming cooking school where you’ll master the art of creating four authentic Thai dishes of your choice. The class ends by enjoying the tasty meal that you have created, alongside a delicious dessert.

We loved that the class size is only ever a maximum four people so we had a lot of guidance. You are also given a small gift and her recipes so you can recreate them at home!
